Tactical medicine is not only for medics and soldiers. Civilians subject to daily fire from russian missiles, drones and artillery need to be ready to respond to life-threatening injuries before medical personnel arrive at the scene of an attack. Heroes for Ukraine offers Tactical First Aid courses for civilians throughout the Mykolaiv region. At the end of the course, each participant receives their own tourniqet. To date over 300 people in the region have been trained and 230 of them received tourniquets.
Statistics show that only one out of ten civilians knows how to use a hemostatic tourniquet and one out of twenty carries one in everyday life. Even after russia’s full-scale invasion, the majority of the local population does not know how to use a tourniquet.
Since the southern front runs through the Mykolaiv region, it is imperative to teach local residents who live under daily fire effective first aid methods (including the use of tourniquets, chest seals, nasopharyngeal tubes, etc.). Heroes for Ukraine has held first aid courses in the city of Mykolaiv, along with villages in the region including Blahodarivka, Berezanka, Koblevo, Nova Odesa, Nechajane, Olshanske, Radsad, Vesniane.
Each month over 220 people take part in these courses. Providing each participant with a tourniquet, which can make the difference between life and death when applied with skill at the right moment, costs $6600 / month (approx. $30 / tourniquet). This is the equivalent of 277,200 UAH.
Heroes for Ukraine offers First Aid courses for civilians free of charge. To sign up for a course or request one in your area, please contact coordinator Oleksandra Blintsova +38 063 705 05 30
A tourniquet is the latest development for quickly stopping bleeding. There are 5 to 7 liters of blood in the human body, depending on height and body weight. If a person is injured in the neck, he has from 10 to 45 seconds to stop arterial bleeding. If it is an injury of the hands – from 1 to 3 minutes, an injury of the legs – from 3 to 5 minutes.
Every hryvnia (or other currency) transferred by you will be used to purchase tourniquets for the civilian population of the Mykolaiv region. There is no greater value than human life. Sometimes very simple but effective things can save the life and health of one, several, or even hundreds of people.
